The Flight from Hong Kong to Sydney takes about 9h. After arrival I tell the guy at the passport control that I have a work and travel visa and he takes me to a different counter where I get the visa in my passport.
All luggage is controlled at the toll control. I have to open everything and show everything, even the inside of the toilette set bag. They are looking for all kinds of organic stuff like food. I knew that from my earlier trips to Australia so there is nothing to find for the officers.
Today I get organized. First of all communication. Telstra has the biggest coverage followed by Vodafone. In Australia most of the Backpackers use Vodafone Prepaid Sim Cards (cheaper for calls in the same network). They have different Packages. The more Credit You buy the cheaper it gets. BUT the Credits that you did not use is gone after a month! So you have to top up the credit every month.
Next Comes Internet Connection. The Wake up hostel I currently stay in provides WiFi in the Lobby and the 1st Floor (I stay in the 6th Floor). It costs about 3$ Per hour if You buy a two hour package. There are lots of teenagers in the huge hostel.Everything costs extra. I keep looking for a better place for me.
As I have to do alot of online research and have to find a Flat and a Job that’s going to be expensive. Also a good place to go online are Libraries. Unfortunatley the nearby UTS Library didn’t allow me to go online cause I am not an UTS Student.
There are some free Wireless Networks (WiFi) in Sydney Check out this Lists and Maps
