2008-10-07 -> 09 Fraser Island

Jens and me are going to Fraser Island today. We had a long bus ride yesterday from Byron Bay to Harvey Bay so we arrived late at the Koala Resort. They showed us a video about the island and another one the next day about four wheel driving. Oliver, I meet him in the City Backpacker Brisbane, is also joining the Tour. The instructors split us into group A and B and told us what to do and what NOT to do. We check the equipment, board the Jeep and drive to the ferry. We lower the pressure in the tires so the Landcruiser has more grip on the soft sand. We drive to Lake Mc Kenzie and Lake Birrabeen have a swim in the beautiful scenery. But we took the wrong way to get to Lake Boomaji. After about an hour drive through the bad bumpy tracks we realized that we are on the wrong way and had to turn around. Thing went from bad to worse cause we get stuck on the way back. It is really difficult to get the heavy Jeep up he hill in the soft sand. The Group B becomes the Team B and we fight our way up pushing the Car. Sometimes other Jeeps drive downhill so we have to reverse back all the way we had done. It takes us about three hours to get back to the Lake Birrabeen and we arrive late at the camp. The Dinner at the Camp is great. We enjoy a cold shower and most go to bed quite early cause we have to be at the Beach at 6am the next day. Meike, Jens and me make some Light Paint pictuers on the dark lake. Group A has a huge Spider in their car. It takes a while to push it out of the car with some sticks. This Day we drive along the Beach to the ship wreck of the Maheno. We swim in the beautiful river Eli Creek that is going to dry out in the next 3years. We walk in the dunes with different colored sand and set up a camp close to the Beach. We walk to the Lake Wobi and have a great swim in the water. With lot’s of catfish and turtles.
In the night we pepare a wonderful meal talk alot and play some drinking games. At about 9pm we go to the Group A. They are already at sleep. So we wake them up but they still want to sleep. – …Boooring…
We meet some other travelers from Ireland and Netherlands.
At the last day the weather is not that good. We drive to Eurong and Lake Mc Kenzie again. It’s still nice but was much better in the Sunshine. Back in the Hostel we all have a long hot shower and some Drinks.
